Bio PLUS+® is a producer brand for organic plants certified in accordance with the EU Organic Regulation – not a certification label in its own right.

Bio PLUS+®: Organic Plants and a Transparent Production Process

Bio PLUS+® stands for plants grown in accordance with EU organic regulations. Using an apple tree as an example, we show the production process in Germany and the businesses involved at each stage.

Certified businesses and the activities covered by the certification are inspected by approved organic control bodies. You can find the certificates under the “Certifications” tab.

The colours of our logo also highlight what makes Bio PLUS+® unique. Each colour represents a key area: cultivation, participating businesses, variety, production process, origin, and growing media and containers. Below, we explain each feature and show how it relates to the plants and production stages concerned.

Dark Green – Cultivation

  • Cultivation in certified businesses in accordance with EU organic regulations.

  • No synthetic chemical pesticides or herbicides, synthetic fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms.

  • Plant protection using plant-strengthening products, beneficial organisms, and mechanical care; weeds controlled mechanically or by hand.

  • Selection of robust varieties suitable for home gardens.

  • Compliance monitored by the responsible organic control bodies.

Light Green – Our Growers

  • Five family-run businesses.

  • Over 300 years of combined experience in fruit production and more than 70 years in trade and marketing.

  • Fruit-growing traditions spanning at least three generations in the families involved.

  • Expertise passed down from generation to generation.

  • Compliance monitored by the responsible organic control bodies.

Yellow – Variety Diversity

  • Up to 600 fruit varieties in the mother orchard.

  • The variety archive provides a basis for propagation and the selection of historic varieties for home gardens.

  • Selection of robust rootstocks for grafting.

  • Information on growth habit, pollination, and harvest time.

Orange – Production Process

  • Using an apple tree as an example: sowing and growing the rootstock in the first and second years, followed by grafting and further cultivation.

  • Available on the market from autumn of the third year or spring of the fourth year.

  • The participating businesses are assigned to their respective production steps.

Red – Origin

  • Using an apple tree as an example, we show the production steps in Germany.

  • The participating Bio PLUS+® businesses are assigned to the respective steps – from propagation material to the finished tree ready for sale.

Brown – Substrate and Containers

  • We generally use substrates with around 50% less peat.

  • In 2026, we produced plants for the first time together with bionero® using peat-free Terra Preta substrate: one-year-old pome and stone fruit trees, as well as two-year-old dwarf fruit trees.

  • We use PCR containers made from recycled household packaging plastics for all plants, for example, from Germany’s Yellow Bag recycling system.
  • The plant label specifies the applicable peat content.
